Accident Benefits Coverages, as outlined in the chart below, are benefits you may be eligible to receive if you are injured in a car accident. As you will see, several of the benefits have different coverage limits, depending on whether your injury is classified as either Minor or Catastrophic*; in such cases, the three levels of coverage are outlined in the chart below.

Accident Benefits Coverage

Income Replacement
|
If you cannot work as the result of a car accident, you may be eligible for weekly income replacement benefits for up to 104 weeks. Consider what you earn annually, along with any other Income Replacement coverage you may have, to choose benefits ranging from a maximum of $400/week ($20,000/year) to $1,000/week ($52,000/year).**

Medical and Rehabilitation
|
This benefit covers medical and rehabilitation expenses (e.g. physiotherapy, prescriptions, and many of the costs outlined in REALITY CHECK) that are not covered by OHIP or most employer benefits plans. The most expansive Medical and Rehabilitation benefit is offered as part of a Combined Medical, Rehabilitation and Attendant Care benefit (see below).***

Attendant Care
|
If you have been seriously injured in a car accident and require an aide or attendant to look after you – either at home or in a healthcare facility – this benefit is intended to cover the associated expense. (The Attendant Care coverage options will appear directly above this definition.)

Caregiver, Housekeeping and Home Maintenance
|
If you are providing full-time care to dependants and can no longer do so as the result of a car accident, the caregiver benefit reimburses you for the expense of hiring someone to provide that care. If you are unable to perform your usual housekeeping or home maintenance duties, these corresponding benefits pay for someone to perform the duties. These benefits are paid for up to 104 weeks.

Dependant Care
|
If you are employed and have dependants (i.e. people relying on you for financial support), this optional benefit is intended to pay additional expenses incurred for their care. These dependants may include, for example, your children or elderly persons in your care.

Indexation
|
This optional benefit provides for the automatic adjustment over time of Income Replacement, Medical and Rehabilitation, Attendant Care and other benefits, in response to changes in inflation, determined according to the Consumer Price Index of Canada.

Death and Funeral
|
If you die as a result of a car accident, this benefit provides a lump sum payment to your spouse and dependants, with an additional payment to cover funeral expenses.

Collision or Upset
|
When your vehicle is involved in a collision with another vehicle or object (or rolls over), this coverage is intended to pay for its repair or replacement. The deductible – or agreement for you to pay the first portion of any loss – is the optional component of this coverage.

|
This coverage is intended to pay for the repair of damage to your car not arising from an accident, such as falling or flying objects and vandalism. The deductible – or agreement for you to pay the first portion of any loss – is the optional component of this coverage.

Direct Compensation – Property Damage (DCPD)

**If you are unemployed, a student, or over the age of 65, please ask your insurance broker for additional details about Income Replacement. You may be eligible for Non-Earner benefits (see TERMS TO UNDERSTAND, below) and/or your Income Replacement benefits may be calculated differently.
***The Combined Medical, Rehabilitation and Attendant Care benefit covers you to a maximum sum of $3,500 for Minor Injuries, $3,000,000 for Catastrophic Injuries, and $1,172,000 for all other injuries, for any one accident for an insured person.
